This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

I didn't know Carol either but I am sorry to hear of her passing, R.I.P.

Happy Mothers’ Day to everyone who has been one, known and loved one, or taken the place of one.

Ours dawned here cold and dark – 35 degrees with freezing rain and howling winds; followed by hail; next a few flurries. Two chairs blew off of the deck facing the lake; sailboat sculpture mast was broken; newly seeded lawn spots and several of the flower gardens look like rice paddies.

Those “raspberries” to everyone on the west coast – I take them all back.

Oh Nancy, I am really so sorry - I remember how demoralizing it was when that winter weather made a surprise comeback. We accidentally ordered from Netflix - and watched - what must be the World's Worst Movie: "Absolute Zero".  ( I think we were trying to order "Zero Dark Thirty"??)  But there was scene where a Florida swimming pool area was suddenly "attacked" (the science of this movie is abysmal!) by a wave of temperatures down to absolute zero, and the pool turned to ice, almost trapping some swimmers who almost didn't make it out. Anyway, I thought of this when I read your post this morning. Nevertheless, wishing you the warmth of an indoor Happy Mother's Day.

Terri,

After watching the umpteenth Harry Potter weekend marathon this weekend (me too fan), I noticed something. We have watched Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, et al, plus the whole Hogwarts student body, from pre-teen, puberty, adolescence, and adult - and none ever had problems with acne. A spell? Hogwarts diet? Or?

Photo Shop.

And I'm sad to say I missed this - also my umpteenth - Harry Potter Weekend. :-(

So, is the committee going to add a "twerking" contest to the picnic agenda?

Sorry Nancy for the "winter revenge" during Mother's Day weekend.

Yes, it was in the 90's for us on the west coast.  But, our forests are too dry and more vulnerable to fires.  Forecasts for showers today so hope that arrives, we do need the moisture.  Had a wonderful Mother's Day last weekend and this weekend is a celebration of my great-grandson's second birthday, so another family get-together.  I love it!

Cheers!

Melody

Marian - I don't need any help feeling stupid!  If you need testimony, ask Nancy.

Speaking of Mother's Day, anybody recognize these people?  I had forgotten about them but they were part of my family on a regular basis.

Jeanne, Jim, & Terri - YOU ARE IMPRESSIVE!

Garry - don't worry, I flunked Marian's test too.

Nevermind, if we all get started right away, we'll look like this by the September gathering......

Nancy - That is impressive!  There may be hope for some of you - but I try to avoid disappointment so I think I'll pass :)

Wow, Nancy - it's NOT inevitable that we can't get up off the floor any more. The hope is alive!

Oh yes, and Papa's name was Lars. What was Mama's name?

05/18/13 12:52 PM #1015

Jeanne Zinser (Gottschalk)

Mama's name was MARTA or MARTHA. The family name was HANSEN. I remember this because my mother's middle name was MARTHA and her maiden name was HANSEN.

They were a Swedish family living in ............ SAN FRANCISCO!  The show ran from something like 1948 to 1957.  Do you realize how embedded that is in our minds?

05/18/13 11:31 PM #1018

Jeanne Zinser (Gottschalk)

Sorry, Garry...the Hansen family was Norwegian (as was my mother's).

Of course you're right Jeannne.  I was just testing the rest of the dummies out there!  I could never get one passed you!

Thanks, Jeanne. I  loved watching that episode of "Mama". How horrible that the price of round steak had risen to 14¢ a pound. And even back then mothers were finding forbidden substances in their teenaagers pockets. And don't tell me they didn't know back then the dangers of cigarette smoking.Mama: "If he smokes it will stunt his growth and give him bad lungs."

Who had televisions in 1948?!

05/19/13 07:04 PM #1023

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

We got our first TV in 1952, and "Mama" was still airing then. I remember begging my parents to let me "stay up" (until 8:00!) to watch "I Love Lucy"

OK, so we're all remembering Mama's family' names.

Anyone out there (like me) that has trouble remembering his/her own kids names?
