This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Yes, the coronation was beautiful, even in black and white TV, and the newsreel at the Ritz theater Saturday matinee. At that age, that was my first real glimpse at what a queen and royalty was all about. We'd heard and read some things, but that was the first live view of all the pagentry and stuff. WOW.

If you're wanting to watch, the BBC has been, as you mught guess, running almost continuous coverage of everything going on, the Smithsonian channel is running shows about Elizabeth and English royalty in general, and the Guardian paper has a bunch of photo series. All beautiful and impressive.

However, if you're planning to go to the funeral, be advised that McDonalds is shutting down all its stores in England the day of the funeral.

I remember seeing the coronation on TV. We heard that they had a customized plane that included a darkroom to process the film as they carried it to the US. When I heard that, I was thinking, "I hope they have an alternate film available if something goes wrong on the way."

We haven't attended any of the class reunions, and I regret that, but it's a two-day trip each way and the trip gets more difficult each year. We've made more than 50-trips to that area since we've lived in Louisiana. We were in Hudson, WI in March for Mary's brother's funeral. The trip North, especially, was difficult. It was very cold and snowing when we made a gas stop in Janesville. Pretty sure that was the coldest and most miserable we've been all year. We keep hoping the family up there will discover there are highways running in both directions. The only reason we'd drive up again this year is if a close relative became terminally ill, or died, so we hope there won't be any need to go. We really don't want to fly and then rent a car. Believe it or not, there's a lot more traffic in the Milwaukee/Waukesha area than there is in Quitman, LA. We don't cope well with traffic and it would be even worse in an unfamiliar car. We did make a trip to Richmond and Katy, TX in July to welcome our newest granddaughter into the world. We didn't cope very well with traffic there, either, and made several trips between our motel and the hospital via the "scenic route." When possible, we let the kids drive, or, at least, lead us to where we need to go. We wouldn't be surprised to learn we're not the only classmates who are finding driving much more challenging than it used to be.

Hope y'all enjoy the reunion and post lots of pictures again.

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

I'd like to add my thanks to Barb's for a wonderful event - the committee and Garry made it a great time. Food was yummy, games were fun, the bar was generous, and the hotel staff was great. But most of all, it was just the pleasure of seeing all those people who shared those angst-full teenage years, where we practiced getting ready for our future lives with our teachers and classmates, remembering the good experiences and the bad. The classmates I talked to turned out to be pretty wonderful people - they must have had some good practice.

We agree with Barb and Terri, and send our thanks to the committee for their dedication and ability to think of everything that made the reunion a wonderful event. Also, a shout-out to the west coast group, who we understand had a hand in making spirits available. Many of us, perhaps most, have given lots of volunteer time in our communities, but our efforts - however valuable - haven't been felt by fellow Custerites. But this committee's work has touched us all, both literally and figuratively. Thank you, thank you.

It sounds as though the reunion was, as usual, fun, and a good time was had by all. I’m so glad. For those of us who wanted to be there, but whose circumstances didn’t let us, we will enjoy it vicariously through the pictures and postings of this terrific site. Thanks to all for such great memories.

Hello! Sorry I missed the reunion.Maybe next time.

I know I don't jump on this message board enough, however, I do enjoy reading your responses.

Be safe and enjoy the rest of your lives. God Bless.

Garry,

The pics and recap of this year’s reunion are terrific, and much appreciated by us “shirkers” who didn’t show up. Thanks again.

But why all the negative optimism about the future? C’mon, look ahead. Who knows? With all the wonder(how do they do that)ful computer gizmos and gadgetry popping up almost daily, what sez we won’t zoom or skype or something from our homes, crypt, or ??. Look how close have we come to the Star Trek world, with all those neat things. By our 75th, I’m looking forward to having a transporter in that spare bedroom, and some Scotty person beaming us to an idyllic venue, or even the Silver Spring Tap, and sipping beverages and cuisine from the replicator, as we mind-meld our school memories.

Still sounds like fun.

In a roundabout way this reminds me of a guy that my Dad worked with at A.O. Smith. He went trick-or-treating with a shot glass. He never made it to the end of the block.

Al,

Sounds like Orlando is getting wet. My sister-in-law and her husband worked for the companies that built the storm drain system in and around Orlando. If you end up with water up to your window sills, it's their fault.

I'm high and mostly dry at 94 above MS! Well drained from here. Good job. Lol. Nicole provided lots of debris in backyard and pool! But not too bad. Hugs to all!

Glad things were OK. The criteria they had to plan for was almost like biblical - I think they had to figure what to do with a rainfall of 10 inches in an hour, but I don't remember for how many hours.

I hope those drains did work. My son and grandgirls are going to Orlando Sunday and Disney next week.

11/12/22 11:16 AM #3295

Nancy Davison (Boerger)

Whew - glad you're all high and dry!
Would that everyone living next to water had the system we have here. At the end of the lake is a weir; a diligent gentleman is responsible for taking out boards when the lake gets too high, thus increasing the flow through the "outlet" into Lake Huron. Everyone approves, as long as he doesn't let out too much water so no one can get their pontoons off of the lifts at the end of the season.
Ours is wrapped; snow fence is up; wood racks are full; sandals and tee shirts have made way for boots, wool sox, and parkas. Soups have replaced cold salads on the table. Almost time to start baking Christmas cookies.
Thank you Garry, for the suggestion to go back to the beginning of these notes. As you said, interesting to see what was on everyone's mind and sad to note whom we have lost.

The problem with going back and reading that old stuff is that you read it and think, "That's dumb." and when you look at who wrote it, you realize it was you.

Nancy Davison (Boerger)

Yes, Jim, there is that.

Reminding us never to write anything that we will be embarassed to read in 2032 .......(mmmmm......?)

It's hard to believe it's been over  60 years since I walked the halls of Custer High School.  And to realize how the years have brought changes and blessings.  It is fascinating to read not only all of your stories but also to see how Custer and the area has changed.  And then to read your stories.  This past summer I went with three of my 24 grandchildren to see the Elvis movie. Afterwards we went out to eat. We actually sat and talked for three hours about all the history our generation experienced and lived through. Some of our young men and women, brothers and sisters went off to a very controversial war.  Most of us watched a President, a Civil Rights Leader, a Pesidential candidate, and a prominent Black Panther leader be killed and buried on live television.  It was interesting to share with my kids how we as a country learned the news.  Everything is so "instant" for them.  News is reported, and the next day is often old news.  I enjoy all your stories.  We all are part of, what is called "50's" generation.  I always enjoy remembering my home growing up with the black and white  checkered  board linoleum, the chrome kitchen table, the "50's" cars we drove and etc.  Elvis, his music... Vietnam.... Hippie's..... the love generation.... we were all part of it!  Enjoy those memories and share them with your grandchildren!  You'd be pleasantly surprised how much they enjoy them!  We finished our meal and went back to the Theater and watched Elvis again!
