Marilyn, the good news is that the New York Times has just published recipes for homemade Twinkies and Hostess Cupcakes. The only things missing will be the wrappers and all the plastic and chemicals.

Ya, guys-Nancy here- just put up with this for a minute :

Homemade Hostess Twinkies
Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

FOR THE CAKES:
Nonstick cooking spray or vegetable oil
60 grams ( 1/2 cup) cake flour
30 grams ( 1/4 cup) all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons milk
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 large eggs at room temperature, separated
12 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
FOR THE FILLING:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
165 grams (1 1/2 cups) confectioners’ sugar
3/4 cup Marshmallow Fluff
2 tablespoons heavy cream.
1. For the cakes: Heat the oven to 350 degrees and adjust the oven rack to the lower-middle position.

2. To make single-use Twinkie molds, cut 12 pieces of aluminum foil 12 inches wide by 14 inches long. Fold each piece of foil in half lengthwise, then fold it in half again to create a rectangle that’s about 6 inches long and 7 inches wide. Repeat to make a dozen rectangles.

3. Place one sheet of folded foil on a work surface with a standard-size spice jar on its side in the center of the foil. Bring the long sides of the foil up around the jar, folding the sides and ends as necessary to make a tight trough-shape from which the jar can be removed. Repeat to make 12 foil molds. Spray generously with nonstick spray or coat with vegetable oil. Place the molds on a baking sheet.

4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cake flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt. In a small saucepan over low heat, heat the milk and butter until the butter melts. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla. Cover to keep warm.

5. Using a standing mixer, beat the egg whites on high speed until foamy. Gradually add 6 tablespoons of the sugar and the cream of tartar and continue to beat until the whites reach soft peaks.

6. Transfer the beaten egg whites to a large bowl and add the egg yolks to the standing mixer bowl (there’s no need to clean the bowl). Beat the egg yolks with the remaining 6 tablespoons sugar on medium-high speed until the mixture is very thick and a pale lemon color, about 5 minutes. Add the beaten egg whites to the yolks, but do not mix.

7. Sprinkle the flour mixture over the egg whites and then mix everything on low speed for just 10 seconds. Remove the bowl from the mixer, make a well in one side of the batter, and pour the melted butter mixture into the bowl. Fold gently with a large rubber spatula until the batter shows no trace of flour and the whites and yolks are evenly mixed, about 8 strokes.

8. Immediately scrape the batter into the prepared molds, filling each with about

3/4 inch of batter. Bake until the cake tops are light brown and feel firm and spring back when touched, 13 to 15 minutes. Transfer the pan containing the molds to a wire rack and allow the cakes to cool in the molds.

9. For the filling: Using a mixer, beat together the butter, confectioners’ sugar and Marshmallow Fluff. Add the cream and beat just until smooth.

10. Just before filling the cakes, remove them from the foil. Using the end of a chopstick, poke three holes in the bottom of each cake. Wiggle the tip of the chopstick to make room for the filling. Transfer the frosting to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch round tip. Pipe frosting into the holes in each cake, taking care not to overfill, until it gently expands. Unlike real Twinkies, these won’t last indefinitely. They’re best served still slightly warm.

Yield: 12 homemade Twinkies.

Nancy, thanks for the recipe. If I get a craving for a Twinkie, I'll try it. Never really like them though, but loved  Hostess Cupcakes. Finding one in my lunch bag was like finding gold - at the time I was thrilled to have one rather than my mom's "home baked" cookies. Thought I was the richest girl in the world on those days! Oh the chocolately frosting with the gooey filling!

Wish I really had a hoard of Twinkies - oh to have had a crystal ball!

Ebay is now the destination for the inevitable trade between those desperate to hoard remaining Twinkies, and the greedy few that still have them and are looking to get rich by fulfilling that need. The NY Post reports one auction has even climbed to $10 million for a 10-count box, and that's just one auctioneer.

My oldest daughter lives in Idaho and works (should say worked) at the Hostess store in Twin Falls. Ever since the announcement, they have been swamped with people wanting to buy as many Twinkies as possible. The last day they were selling them at less than half price. She carried the insurance since her husband is a rancher and is self-employed. Back to square one, now.

I always preferred the cupcakes. Twinkies have too many preservatives. Of couse that means when they dig some people up a 1000 years from now they'll look the same as when they were planted.

Separate note to Marilyn advised that the NY Times also ran the recipe for Hostess Cupcakes. I didn't want to risk sending that one as well (you're welcome, guys) . Perhaps  anyone can Google their recipes without having a subscription, I'm not sure. If not, and anyone wants, I'll send it.

Who remembers this little guy peeking in your windows checking to see if you're being good?  Talk about scaring you straight!

'Call me Maybe' definitely has potential for our group.  Little concerned if we would be able to hear the phone, much less get up to answer it.  I'm thinking 'Gangnam Style' might fit our personalities better.  We want to be uninhibited, crazy, and have fun.  Just thinking of possibilities for our future gigs.

Terri,

Sorry to be late responding to your winery question - I was up in NoCal (Lincoln) marrying off my son.

To answer, yes, there are many vineyards and wineries in the San Diego area. There's also Temecula Valley just north of here that claims to be CA's "other" wine country. And if you're really interested, you can go on a hot air balloon ride while your tasting your wine.

Garry,

Didn't (doesn't?) the Army have a uniform set they called "Pinks" or "pink and greens"? Did that have anything to do with pink Sno Balls?

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare.  They are consumed in twelve minutes.  Half-times take twelve minutes.  This is not coincidence.  ~Erma Bombeck

An optimist is a person who starts a new diet on Thanksgiving Day.  ~Irv Kupcinet

It has been an unchallengeable American doctrine that cranberry sauce, a pink goo with overtones of sugared tomatoes, is a delectable necessity of the Thanksgiving board and that turkey is uneatable without it.  ~Alistair Cooke

Coexistence:  what the farmer does with the turkey - until Thanksgiving.  ~Mike Connolly

The thing I'm most thankful for right now is elastic waistbands.  ~Author Unknown

I suppose I will die never knowing what pumpkin pie tastes like when you have room for it.  ~Robert Brault,

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Has anyone gotten his/her Reunion DVD yet? Seems like it's taking a very LOOOONG time to fill the orders.

11/24/12 03:43 PM #690

Garry Sellers

Jeanne and the scores of other people who have called or emailed me wondering about the reunion video delivery date:     I don't have a clue!

I have been excluded from any information (including the option to order it!) because I took exception to turning over our complete class list to an outsider who we knew nothing about.  So I am persona non grata ... in fact I was told that I am incredibly rude!  (As you can imagine, that hurt me to the quick!)  I don't know  who gave them addresses or from what database but it did not come from the website data.   I heard the delivery date was suppose to be 4 to 6 weeks which should have been mid to late October.   Then I think Sandy or somebody said another couple weeks ... which was a couple weeks ago.  To date nobody has received the video to my knowledge.

Here's what came off the Raines Video Production website in Portland, OR.  I'd recommend you contact them directly.  While you're chatting with them, tell them I send my fond regards!

Raines was certainly quick enough to cash my check.  That sucking sound was my money being removed from my checking account. Someone told me once that patience is a virtue.  Didn't believe it then and don't believe now.

Congratulations on your son's marriage, Jim! Hope it went well. We will be marrying off ours in June, also in NorCal. (For those of you non-Californians, there are really two states here: NorCal and SoCal. Not sure exactly where the border is: somewhere south of Sacramento, I think!) Marian and Marilyn, my sister and I each still have our Billie the Brownies; they sit hidden in our Christmas trees and peek out, spying on the behavior of the adults passing by. Needless to say, Santa isn't too generous with us, after getting Billie's report. Loved the Ventures and the General! "Walk' Don't Run" was my brother's garage band's first number. Also still waiting for the video/DVD. Will have to call Raines!

For the favorite band/song group - anyone remember King Richard of WRIT? I remember he was one of the 2 DJs and stations to listen to. He disappeared somewhere around jr or sr year.

After bombing UWM for a year, I joined the Navy and was sent to San Diego. One day I turned on the radio, channel scanned, and guess who was on? It was King Richard of Kwhatever. San Diego must have been greener pastures, bigger market (and warmer weather) than WRIT. Small world.

Who was the other DJ on WOKY?

Jeanne Zinser (Gottschalk)

Popular disc jockeys on WOKY during the Top 40 years, from the 50's through the 70's, included Bob White, "Mad Man" Michaels, "Lucky" Logan, Mitch Michael, Sam Hale, Ron Riley, Bob Barry, Carl Como, Paul Christy, Michael Lee Scott, Jim Brown, Jack McCoy, Johnny Dark, Craig Roberts, Jack Lee, Robb Edwards, and the late Bob Collins.

Sally--

It wasn't a spoken prayer, it was a song. But, after shaking my brain back and forth, I cannot remember the name of the song.

When in doubt, Jeanne, consult the program. Found my Senior Banquet program in which I notated the title of the song: "God Speaks to Me."  But I truly don't remember how the song goes. Nor do I remember who accompanied me on the piano--could have been Ellyn Steinbach or Sharolyn Lusk. Help!

TO ALL WHO HAVE ORDERED THE DVD FROM RAINES:

I just  spoke with "someone in charge" at Raines, telling him that I was one (of many) who had ordered the Reunion DVD and was upset that it has not yet been delivered. He mentioned that he had recently spoken with Sandy, and told her (and me) that we should expect our copies by the end of the week. Sorry to say that I'm skeptical, but will be happy if he was being honest with me. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

Jeanne

Thanks so much for calling Raines, Jeanne. So far they don't have a very good track record for their promises, but at least there are real people there who answer the phone.

Wow! You know all the DJ's at WOKY!  and the early ones sound familiar to me. They should, because during my high school bouts (2) with the Hong Kong and Asian flus, both of which had me flat in bed for a week, all I did, morning and night, was listen the top 20 radio stations. This is why I can still sing most of words to those 60s songs. A very familiar name is Robb Edwards - he is now the Miller Park announcer for the Brewers!

Garry I like the new holiday spirit look of the home page. I am so glad you renewed the license and tthat the website  is still going to be maintained. It is a great way to stay in touch, after finally getting back together and having caught up on 50 years.

Jeanne Zinser (Gottschalk)

Terri--Truth be told, I got the list of WOKY DJs off the internet, but I certainly DO remember many of them. And yes, Robb Edwards, Miller Park voice of the Brewers, is a joy to hear at the games. He had a bit of a health scare several years ago. I believe he underwent open heart surgery, but has recovered very well.
