This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Sandy,

Good idea.  If you are so inclined you can stop and see my brother Jerry (Custer 1963).  He has lived in NYC since 1965 in a co-op at 55th and 10th.

Dear classmates,

Need a little help for the reunion.  We have the words to the 'Custer Fight Song', but do not have the music it goes to.  Anyone know the name of the piece of music it was done to?   Some of us are thinking of leading our group in the song at the reunion.  We are crazy.

Appreciate any help you can give us.

Thanks,

Sandy O

Sandy...

A portion of the tune runs through my aging mind, but I don't think it was an existing tune which the fight song words were put to. I know the tunes to a lot of college fight songs, which are often "borrowed" by others. But Custer's does not ring that familiar bell with me. Sorry. Wish I could help.

Jeanne

Wonder how many of you remember this...Custer's Alma Mater...?

(to the tune of "Far Above Cayuga's Waters" [Cornell's Alma Mater]

 Words by E. Grant Boltz)

"On the lawns of Custer High School
Elms of beauty grow.
Branches strong are ever reaching
Upwards to the light.

So we too are ever striving,
Striving as the elms,
To gain through toil and friendship loyal
Beauty, strength, and right.."

I didn't remember the Alma Mater, Jeanne - but the words are very nice. Now I have something to replace my memory of that melody used in the last scene of  "Dirty Dancing". Yes, what are the lyrics of the "Fight Song"?

Words to the Custer Fight Song:

Glory to Custer

To the Red and White

To her name be ever loyal

Fight fellows, all your might---U-Rah-Rah

March on for Custer

You must never stop

Keep on  charging, hit that line

Put Custer on the ta-ah-op

winklaughAnyone know the melody it goes to?

Thanks to Dean Schwarten for sending the lyrics.

Anybody recall this weatherman?

How about this place?  Anybody ever go there and where would I find it?

Weatherman - Bill ?????

Pig n Whistle  - East Capital Drive  ?

...and the weather was sponsored by.........Butternut Coffee.

"The Pig", as we called it, is no longer there. Iit was on  East Capitol drive, south side of the street, immediately west of the railroad bridge.

I am so sad the 'Pig' is no longer on Capitol Drive.  I judged a National gymnastics meet in Milwaukee in the 80's and had so much fun taking the judges to the 'Pig'.  I told them to order Custard---and many said that they did not like custard!  I told them to trust me--HA.  They were pleasantly surprised.

Do you remember the car races from Capitol to Silver Spring or Hampton through the park by the river?

Gee - you guys are all too old.  Didn't WTMJ start on Channel 3 and then another, I think WISN, come on channel 12 later.  And finally it was that stupid Channel 6 ... like WTVK or something?

I've got a lot more but you'll have to wait for the reunion where your ancient memories will pay off in big cash, fabulous vacations, and valuable prizes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

06/20/12 09:53 PM #65

Tom Winslow

Well Channel 4 may have started on Ch. 3,.but I have no memory of that.  That may mean that Gary is substanially older than I am. It seems to me that Ch. 6 started as Ch.5.

Vacations ?   Does that mean that I have to renew my passport to Cudahy ???

Anybody for a late night goodie?

OMG! My favorite weatherman Bill Carlson, and I actually remembered his name! I think he was the weatherman the whole time I lived in Milwaukee. Thanks, guys for excavating those deeply buried - but apparently still there - memories.

Ken ... people say they worry about the state of my mind.  I hope they're keeping a close watch on you!!!

Snirkle!!  I had totally forgotten about them - used to be one of my favorites!

And why did it take 50 years for me to realize that Garry's name has two r's!!

Okay ... I'll write it here once more and the last time.  My first month in the Army in 1963 and the paymaster says sign your name like it is on your birth certificate.  I said I did!  He said no you didn't and proceeds to show me a copy that has my name spelled GaRRy.   It floored me and my mother!  She had no idea that's how she had spelled it.  That's what happens when you're #8 out of 9 kids.  They forget who you are!  Anyway, no extra R, no money.  That's a pretty convincing argument.  After 3 years of that, how could I go back to one R?  (PS Check out Garry Shandling, Garry Moore, Garry Marshall (Penny's husband)) (PSS Cleaning out my Mom's stuff after she passed away in 2003 I found my birth announcment.  It had the right date, right weight, right length, and across the front she had written "David" ... my brother!  That explains why I'm so shy and reserved.  My parents didn't know who I was and I was afraid of being thrown out!)

06/22/12 09:06 AM #71

Barbara Blair (Brenzel)

David/GaRRy, you just crack me up!  Didn't know you came from such a large family either.  Having only 2 kids, I can understand totally how your Mom made some goofs!  And in kindergarten, when my daughter, Jackie, had to spell her full name of Jacqueline, she said she wished that I had named her TINA.  Learned my lesson well - I named my son, MARK!

GaRRy...um!..GaRy....no, um!....JeRRy...oh, forget it! At least you weren't the second twin trying not to be left in that dark, damp place.......That is why my name is KeNNy. No wait...KeNNeth. You're right, Garry, you may have to keep a close eye on my mental stability, too!

Anybody ready for another snack?  I wasn't much of a chocolate person.  Give me Indian Head Pumpkin Seeds!

Can you believe it?  We have 120 people who have logged onto our website ...AFTER 50 YEARS!  Jan has contact information on over half the 500+ classmates. I really love hearing what people have done, half of whom I can't remember (were there really guys named Willman or Sauer?)!  What is your take of this phenomena?  What do you find the most interesting or unexpected ... or is this what you would have predicted from our class 50 years ago?

06/25/12 12:28 AM #74

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

I am floored because 10 years ago I started trying to find old classmates to see if there'd be a 40th, and everyone I talked to said "Our class just didn't seem to be interested in getting back together." It made me feel sad, because it's bad enough that Custer doesn't exist anymore, but then for our class to all check out too was depressing.I am having so much fun finding out what everyone's up to! I think it's amazing, but we are probably the first generation that grew up with technology, and it's a natural way to communicate!

To Garry.......I want to thank you for creating this website.  I am pleasantly surprised at how many of us have and use computers.  I know some others our age, that do not use them, or if they have them, they just check email.  The response to this has been great, every day I check in to see who else has shown up.

My husband and I sometimes discuss the current situation in this crazy world  that we live in, and we both feel the era that we grew up in was the perfect time to be a kid.  Life was so much more innocent then, and most of the people from our generation, are good genuine people.  We witnessed the beginning to television, I remember sitting in front of a huge floor console radio, listening to "The Inner Sanctum".  We saw such major changes in how we go about our daily life.....microwaves, air conditioning, fax machines, computers, cell phones, email, electronic banking and paying bills.

I miss the good old days sometimes, and I have found a great online jukebox. http://tropicalglen.com/

It has music from 1950 thru 1989.  You can select a year, and there are 100 hits from that year.  Check it out.

If you like getting nostalgic......you will love this link.

Thanks again Garry, and all who put this together!
