This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

One for you Garry. You were right.

What can I say! The first half was great: we score, they score. Then, for some reason, the Pack decided to let Kaepernick run right through their line whenever he wanted to; oh yes, and the offensive line decided to leave Rodgers to the wolves (the hungry ones). But I feel lucky to have left Wisconsin not long after the era of Lombardi and Starr to come to the SF Bay area when Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were working their magic. How can I not love both teams?

Nancy - it must be global warming!

Congrats to the CCC.  Your penalty is cold weather and maybe snow.  Next time just let the Packers win and keep the warm weather.  Finally I know why Garry missed so many shots:  He was unable to look.  Good Luck next week with your Wisconsin quarterback.

And we thought flat-screen was today's technology.

Jim, that must have been the 50's version of the "little TV for the kitchen".

Terri,

I remember having one of those at our house on Newton Pl when I was going to Carlton. Ours had some kind of foot square magnifying lens on a stand in front of it that made the picture bigger. You had to sit in one exact spot in front of it so it would be in focus.

Now I have a nice color flat screen TV and tri-focals, and I still have to sit in one exact spot so it's in focus.

This playoff stuff is too nerve-racking but it wil make for a nice Super Bowl party at our house out here on the Left Coast!  We appreciate the support of the 3 or 4 Packer fans who have forgiven us!  Hey, this is our first since 1994!  Now who was younger, Cain or Abel ... you know how brothers can fued!  Hopefully we can reverse the outcome.

Presidential Inauguration Day -

Any former CONNtinentals out there remember marching in President Kennedy's inauguration parade?

Wow factor.

Just looking at the weather and doing some math (thanks Mrs. S). Over the next couple of hours, there's going to be a 100 degree difference between where I live now and where I lived in WI. Not saying this is a CA thing, it's just a boggler on my little old mind. 100 degrees.

Garry, thanks for the invite to you superbowl party.  Will try to get some REAL Custer alums (those that stayed home to enjoy our winters) together to help you celebrate. Hope you have enuf space.  SF certainly has alot of Wisc ties, coache's father, QB, etc.

Hi Jim, About the "wow factor": We had 1 degree above zero at breakfast time this morning (don't even want to know what it was last night when the 30-mile-per-hour winds blew across the lake all night) My daily walks have involved a neck gator, longjohns, and yak trax.....a singular and unique fashion statement. Northern Michigan is not for sissies.

Nancy,

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I think that's why God invented hot chocolate.

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

Nancy, I am proud of you for even going out for a walk in those temps. I remember how I loved putting on my XC skis and hitting the trails in 1 or less digit weather. But that was then! Meanwhile, I shall put on my light sweatshirt and enjoy a walk on this beautiful, sunny day with 58° in the shade.

Headline in this morning's paper: "Stronger than flu, 49ers fever grips Bay Area."

Yeah!!!!! Go Niners!!!!!

01/22/13 09:56 PM #842

Jim Cejka

Oh yeah Terri -

You trying to convince us how hard you had it cross-country skiing up there in San Jose or wherever???

01/26/13 10:47 AM #843

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

No, Jim - sorry to say we don't have XC skiing here in the South Bay. We have to crawl our car slowly up US 80 in a line of similarly-minded people, putting chains on our tires at the appropriate place, to get to a ski area. I was referring to my good ol' Madison days when I was 30-something and could still get back up when I fell down.

Thinking about what Sally was saying: I was wondering if the kids in Milwaukee mostly have their parents driving them to school - as they do here, even in beautiful weather  - because everyone is in too much of a hurry to walk anymore. Our schools are trying SO hard to get kids to walk - if for no other reason than physical fitness - but it's a very, very hard sell!

01/26/13 09:10 PM #844

Jim Cejka

Terri,

They sure didn't sell it down here. We live about a mile from a high school. They have a nice little pick-up, drop-off lane out front, holds about 8 cars (good planning). Of course the school is bigger than Custer. Mornings and afternoons there's 4 lanes of traffic trying to get into those 8 spots. Grid lock at the school, blocks 3 intersections. I haven't yet  seen a parent having a light-bulb moment - If I just drop this kid off at the corner, I could avoid (and not contribute to) this mess.

We walked because dad took the car to work early in the morning and mom stayed home. One car to the family. Parents driving us wasn't even an idea.

Besides, if we could walk all the way to McGovern Park every to go skating or swimming, we could certainly walk to school.

Went to my granddaughter's cheerleading competition yesterday.  The host school has an all-parents cheerleading squad & I think they got the highest cheering of the day.  BUT, they could not hold a candle to the performance of Sandy & the "girls" at the reunion.  Still cracks me up when I think of them!  You go girls!!

01/28/13 07:11 PM #846

Sandy Wachs (Oldham)

Thanks Barb.  We all had so much fun.

01/29/13 08:40 PM #847

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

I wonder how much the decrease in walking is going to affect the average lifespan. It would be too bad if our generation ended up being the healthiest, and it starts to go downhill from here on. The people who are trying to eat better, exercise more and live healthy are very outspoken, but I'm afraid they're also outnumbered. We have the same traffic logjam here, Jim. A high school, middle school and 2 elementary schools all in a 1-mile radius makes for total chaos here at dropoff and pickup times. And that's rain or shine, in beautiful weather.

Our dance routine at the reunion was SO much fun!

Hey Girls,

Your dance routine at the reunion was fun and exciting even to those of us who didn't attend. Those pictures!

Almost to the cold shower level...
