This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Here we go folks - be the first in your neighborhood to get one!

I wonder if WI folks could put snow tires on it?

Thanks Patricia McMc and Garry for that amazing video. In the past few years I had the privilege of driving a senior friend to appointments and church. She was 87, had suffered a stroke from which she bravely fought to recover; but her body was just failing her. I will never forget how she treasured each day. When we were driving, she'd often marvel, "Just look at that sky!" Having just retired, I was in the process of getting off the "merry-go-round" of being too busy often just for the simple gratitude and joy in things around us. It was a real gift to look at the world through her eyes.

It will only hit 70 in this part of California today.  You guys must be almost through winter, huh?  It's March ... signs of Spring ... maybe some daffodils popping through the snow?  I remember running around without a jacket during Wisconsin "Indian Summers".  You probably are right now, huh?  You guys in WI MN, MI are so lucky!!!

Seriously, I do know for certain that California as well as Wisconsin can have some serious problems with bears.  This video of a film crew shooting a washing machine commercial ought to make you aware of the problems of humans encroaching on nature!

Cute video, Garry.

Yes, we don’t mess with our bears. Frankly, though, the hunters are more scary – during deer season we avoid walking in the wooded parts of our property. Even if I did own a bright orange parka, it might not be enough protection.

No daffodils in sight yet, not even schneeglucken. We had a gorgeous drive here (Milwaukee) on February 8 – miles and miles of roads lined with trees completely covered in snow, the pines being especially beautiful. A week in the tropics reminded me (again) of how happy I am to live in the north. The first breath of fresh, crisp air brings such great joy. Yes, it’s not for everyone, but it works for me. And I’m happy that California works for you. Bloom where you are planted.

Sal - taking out the garbage without a jacket starts at around 30 degrees, right?

I'm glad CA works for us. My son and his wife (Coast Guard) got their orders and are staying in San Francisco/Alameda. Means we get to take more beautiful drives up along the coast, or the Coast Starlight beautiful + relaxing + leave the driving to them train ride.

I remember WI spring as meaning that the snow falling was wetter and heavier to shovel. And always waiting for that one more, because until the 4th of July or so, you're always thinking there was one more snow storm coming.

Jim, we probably pass you in the opposite direction visitng our son in LA :-)

That bear in the video caught me by surprise! Pretty funny.

Okay, Sally, here comes my ring story. When I moved back to Wisconsin (Madison) in 1976, the movers "retained" one of my boxes: the one that was nicely labeled  "jewelry and gifts" to make it easier for the movers to spot the valuable one. Boy, were they disappointed to find out I'm not the diamond type.  But somewhere, some mover has my Custer class ring. I doubt if they could pawn it for much!

Definitely a beautiful Spring day here in NorCal - 70°s and daffodils and tulips poking through the soil. However, we have our version of the constant return of WInter, too. Tomorrow rain and cold are predicted.

Thank you Terri for the heads up on what our weather will be like in two days.  Whatever CA gets, AZ gets it two days later :)

For all the teachers out there, here is what one teacher taught, that stuck with one person, and should influence us all:

Sorry Sally,

Housing out here wouldn't exactly be "equivalent in cost and size" to something in MN. Pick one. I'm sure you could find something equal in size, or something equal in cost, but both, HaHa.

And we have a beautiful big 2 bdrm guest apartment in our place here outside San Diego. Of course, you might have a hard time time leaving the pool to go house hunting. Or the ocean is 15 minutes away, another distraction. And you'd have to get used to the ocean breezes instead snow blower exhaust.

But we have snow too. I can see it on a mountain about 20 miles NE of here.

Just let us know the date.

Here we go again for some confusion for a short while.

We don't do daylight savings in Arizona. Many people in Arizona including many businesses, farming communities and people with children, preferred to remain on MST throughout the year because daylight saving produced no personal benefits for them. They had tried it for one year in the 1960s but there was so much negative reaction that they never tried it again. Most people believed that a daylight saving schedule was not necessary for Arizona's hot climate. For many, it was easier to undertake personal activities, including sporting activities, when the temperature was cooler in the evening. Some also said that without daylight saving time, the state still managed to save heating and cooling energy in the summer (northern hemisphere) months.

When we go to Maine this summer we will loose 3 hours.  When we come home we will get 3 hours younger :)

Wow, Marian - I didh't know that about DST in AZ.  I guess that means our son who is in Phoenix & Tempe for baseball  Spring Training will be TWO hours behind us as of Sunday. Good to know! By the way, be prepared tomorrow for the rain & wind that bombarded our house all night last night. And more hitting us tomorrow, so will probably visit you on Sunday.

Okay, now it's my turn for "duh" - it was just pointed out to me that the CA and AZ time zones will now be the SAME -not 2 hours apart! I love the "edit" feature!

Marion,

Speaking of AZ, I just read an article where the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers was stung by a scorpion in his house down there during spring training. Then they listed all the other players that have been stung recently. They talked about the 80 species, etc. Sounds like some of the natives aren't friendly, especially to those out-of-towners.

I know, Marian - just got off the phone with my son and both the Angels and Dodgers games were rained out, so a pretty wasted day for him. I'm going to pass on Jim's story about the scopions to him - might make a good rainy day alternative story he could check out. But hopefully the rain will help the drought forecast to be less severe! The rain we got  yesterday that you should get Sunday was gentle and not so blustery.

It said on the Home Page that Margaret (PEG) Winslow, Tom's widow had passed away, but it did not give the link to the obituary.  I found it, here it is!

Scorpions can be a problem in some areas.  Where developers have dug up scorpion habitats in the native desert, the scorpions might retaliate.  I have never seen one except in the arachnid’s area of the zoo – of all places.  If one lives in an area where scorpions used to live, and don’t want to go away, you can find them with a black light.  Scorpions like water as in the area of pool pump equipment.  They move around at night.  There are so many different varieties that I’m not sure which are super dangerous, a little dangerous or not dangerous.  However, we can leave our doors and windows open whenever the weather is nice because we have minimal flies and no mosquitos or other flying insects.  Some good.  Some bad.  smiley

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

And you have to hope no scorpions wander in at night! I'll pass that info on to JP. Maybe he can use it for a story. You are right in Phoenix, yes?

The scorpion that bit the Brewer's guy was only about 1 1/2 inches long and inside the house. He thought is was just a big bug and picked it up with a tissue. Of course, the one that bit him was the one of those 80 species that is known to be lethal, but he survived. WI guy, used to mosquitos that big, not scorpions, just didn't recognize it.

I also live in Phoenix.  I was told once that the smaller, almost translucent scorpions are the most dangerous.  But also, that Black Widow spider bite is more dangerous.

When I moved here 33 years ago, I was working in the office of a country club, we were at the base of a mountain, and when it rained, scorpions, snakes etc, got washed down.  I picked up a scorpian with a tissue from the sink in the ladies room.  At the time it looked like one of those critters my boys used to make with their "Creepy Crawly" set.

The MLB channel is televising the Brewers-Dodgers game from AZ, picking up the broadcast from the Milwaukee channel. So, I get to sit here in SoCal (720, no rain) watching the Brew Crew and Milwaukee commercials. Wonder if Terri's son is covering it? Funny, instead of Brewers across their jerseys, they have Cerveceros. Local color.
