This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

For those of you who have chosen to remain in the snow belt; you have my deepest sympathy. Today's high will be 75 and 80 by Sunday. Time to get the shorts out, have worn them for the last month, as the temps have been under 70.

Terri,

Drop everything! The Jeopardy annual Teacher's Tournament runs this week and next. Go for it.

I like Jeopardy; most of the questions/answers require actual knowledge. Judi keeps telling me to tryout for the show. But, if I did; it'd be just my luck that they would ask me things that I don't know. Plus, you have to pay your own way to the show's taping. Also, I'm at the point, now; that I know the answer. But, I can't think of it until it's too late.

And, it's 68 now, going up to 76. All of you who are still digging out; send the snow here. We can use the moisture.

Hey Jim, I'm there! I even got the final answer, but I can't remember what it was. :-) They were all too young to know some of the answers. But I didn't know ANY of the pop music questions.

We're also big Jeopardy fans, and look almost brilliant in some categories (yes, we're slow - but that's what "pause" buttons are for!). But when they pull up the t.v. shows and rock stars, we look like we've flown in from Mars. Sometimes it's a generational thing (the rock stars), but with some of the t.v. shows, we were just too busy to watch them. Unless, of course, they go back to: Howdy Doody and Klarabelle, Kookla/Fran/and Ollie, The Lone Ranger, etc. Although for Karsten that's a bust as well, not having arrived here until 1961.

Don't feel sorry for us up here in the ice and snow.....some of us don't really mind it at all. (Ask me again in March - by that time it's all wearing a bit thin). As they say in the Nordic countries, "There is no bad weather - just bad clothing".

I'm with you, Nancy, about the winter weather. I have no complaints, unless I happen to fall on black ice and break my leg. I'm not even opposed to seeing snow in March. Some of the best snow days/cancelled school days came in March when everyone was ready for an unexpected day off. But when winter lingers into April/May (snowstorm on my b'day, May 10,1990, school cancelled), I get more than a bit peeved! But we're tough, weather-seasoned mid-Westerners who appreciate the change of seasons.

Whew! Then I'm not the only one who doesn't remember lyrics, songs, even bands, after "I Wanna Hold Your Haaaand."

You know you're on "the back nine" when: you have three sizes of clothing in your closet, two of which you'll never wear; you sleep better on a lounge chair with the t.v. on than in bed (it's called "pre-sleep"); you miss the days when everything worked with an "on" switch and an "off" switch"; going out is good - coming home is better.

Jeanne,

Do I ever remember the May 10th snow storm, 10 inches worth. And, the day after my birthday, We lived in Erin, a 25 mile drive. I had gotten off work at 8 that morning. I had one of those sexy long nose Chevy vans. I made it to about 4 miles West of HWY 41, on Holy Hill Rd; before I gave up. The van had a flat bottom and the snow would build up under the front and lift the front wheels off of the pavement. I'd back up a little and try again. Just before Hillside Rd I saw a farmers driveway with a half dozen cars sitting there. I joined them and sat there for 3 hours, until the plow came through. A month later I had a huge bonfire from all of the downed branches in our yard.

First, for all of you who have the misfortune to be experiencing a good(?) old fashioned winter; you have my deepest sympathies.

I have just learned of another high school web site, similar to Classmates.com. I joined classmates several years ago; but, have dropped the pay version. The new site is: alumniclass.com. Has anyone else heard of it ? Judi has joined. The site appears to be school specitic; so, it seems to be a cross between Classmates and our own site. You do have to pay to get anything except generalites.

And, a comment about profiles. I have tried listing both of my home locations; but, it will only let me list one. I find that I have to admit to being a 'snowbird ' I now wimp out on winter. So, summer is in Portland, MI and winter is in Bullhead City, AZ.

,

Jim--

Was planning on making the trip for the CCC reunion, UNTIL diabetes took hold of my husband Robert once again. He developed a severe infection in his left foot, resulting in the amputation of 2 toes. He currently has a wound vac attached to his foot. A home care nurse comes 3 times a week to change the wound's dressing. So, travel, at this juncture, is out of the question. Hopefully, all will be well by early June. We have a great trip planned to visit islands surrounding the UK, via a cruise with Grand Circle Travel.

Hooe you all have a grand time next weekend. I'll be thinking of you.

Jeanne

Hey, Jim

I finally remembered to ask. Who had to travel the furthest to get to our west Coast reunion ?

And, welcome to the group, Mary.

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for the welcome.

Is your question about distance a subtle suggestion that you came pretty far?

Mary

Jim Cejka

Lauren,

The distance thing would be between you and Jon Stanelle, who came from Las Vegas. I don't know the milages. However, when he got to the bay area, remember, he wandered around for hours, somehow ended up in that ghost house in San Jose, and got to the reunion 4 hours late. So, I'm sure that even if it's shorter from Vegas to Ken's, he probably racked up hundreds of extra miles  before he actually found the place.

I didn't think the farthest person prize was all that great anyway, especially since we didn't offer one.

Honoring a Milwaukee-born Fighter Pilot

In February, the Mitchell Gallery of Flight installed its newest exhibit honoring U.S. Marine Corps Major General Tom Benes.  A Milwaukee native, he graduated from Custer High School and from UW-Madison.  Major General Benes passed away last September while the exhibit was under development.  Visit the Mitchell Gallery near the entrance to Concourse C to learn more about his Marine Corps career and accomplishments as a military aviator and leader.

(posted in Mitchell Airport Memo - March 2015)

(I don't know any other details re:Tom Benes, but maybe someone else might know his class year, etc.)

Mary,

It's not really a hint as much as curiosity. I have an insatiable curiosity about almost everything. And, it hasn't killed me yet; although, it's come close a couple of times.

Jim, For what it's worth, I'm 95 miles South of Vegas. So, I guess that gives me bragging rights, in loo of a prize.. And, that first 5 miles on the trip back to the motel was a real rush, in the dark.

This is a really cool site that I got from one of the mitilary sites that I'm on. Put the date of your birthday in and it will tell and play the number 1 song for that day,

http://playback.fm/birthday-song

I see the pictures from the West Coast Mini Reunion are posted. It always surprises me at how gray my hair is in pictures. It doesn't look that gray when I look in the mirror.

Thanks for that fun link, Lauren. Mine was "Swinging on a Star" by Bing Crosby. I have always known the lyics to that song, because of my first elementary school (K through 3). Nancy D-B might remember this. The prinicipal, Mr. Schujinski (not sure of spelling), used to love to hold sing-a-long assemblies for the whole school. And he REALLY enjoyed leading these. I can still see him on the stage vigorously conducting the whole school. One that we sang every time was 'Swinging on a Star". The lyrics are great for inspiring kids to succeed in school. I remember not wanting to be a pig, fish or mule. :-)

Jon,

Regarding MG Tom Benes. There was a Sharon Benes in my grade school classess at St. Alberts on 35th and Florist Av. She lived on 37th St, halfway between Silver Spring and Sheridan. She was/is in our Class of '62. But, I don't remember if she had a brother.

Terry,

Do we have the same birthday ? Swinging On a Star is my song, too. Crosby sang the song in Going My Way. I checked it out on IMDB ( Internation Movie data Base ) Andy Williams, his brothers, and Alfalfa from the Little Rascals were in the boys choir that sang the song with Crosby. IMDB doesn't say whether or not the song debuted in the movie; but, I think that it did. And, that's my trivia for the day.

Oh, Terri - thank you, thank you, thank you! I had totally forgotten that fun song, and if ever I needed it, I need it now. The kids are up in the mountains skiing, and here are Gampies and Gammies with Davie (fourth birthday in a week) and the two hounds. It will be great fun to have a new song (the old Girl Scouts' " I Stuck My Head in a Little Skunk's Hole" and "Do Your Ears Hang Low?"......enough already).

Yes, I remember the singing at LaFollette; remember Miss Ball and Mr. Powell? He's the teacher - bless his heart - who told my mom that I was smart (not too P.C. Today, I suppose). That was probably the only thing that helped me survive the trauma at home, plus the time with Miss McKenna (was that Garden Homes?) .....boy, she sure didn't like me!

Thanks for the memories....now I'm going to check out what everyone was singing on my birthday.

Can I trade birthdays with someone? I don't like my song.

Wow! Either we were all born in the first part of August,1944, or that song really had staying power!
