This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Melody - we may cut you some slack, IF you promise to stay a Packer cheesehead, in absentia. You can adopt the funny talk, but have to keep your allegiances to the Green and Gold, instead of those panther guys.

In case anybody has noticed, our "In Memory" YouTube video has been deleted by one of the music labels.  I understand their rights but you sure would think they have better things to do with their time than take down a video honoring our deceased classmates.  If anybody wants a copy of it I think Fred and I have one around here someplace.

Jim, I promise to wear my Packer hat and regularly cheer for the Pack whenever they are televised over here!  After all, once a Packer backer - always a Packer backer!!!

So, it's veg in front of the Olympics time again.

Somehow, zipping on my sled down the hill at Smith Park, or somebody's tobaggan (once we had access to a car) on the big slide at Currie Park, don't seem up to luge or bobsled. But, the scenery is great, it's a nice relief from anything else on TV, and a good mental exercise trying to figure out how some of those events got to be a "sport," let alone in the Olympics.

Favorite Olympic event so far. So glad he made it back for these Olympics.

So, it was 79 degrees yesterday and the trees have buds all over, some white dogwoods are in bloom; but not in our front yard where an oak tree lives.  Two baby rose bushes are newly planted and so there is hope for flowers in the future.  Rain scheduled for Sun and Mon will help them get settled in the ground.  No, I do not do any gardening, much too disabled for that...the work is all done by my daughter-in-law.  However, I still do some cooking and with this beautiful kitchen, it would be a shame not to cook!smiley

Sorry to see the olympics close on Sunday.  I disagree with the gold in the ladies figure skate.  The two Russians were both equally wonderful in their execution but I think the silver skater had an better artistic program than the gold.  A lot of people on social media have the same opinion.  Have a good weekend, y'all!

Got this in my email about WW2 and thought y'all would appreciate it.

Starting in 1940, an increasing number of British & Canadian Airmen found themselves as the involuntary guests of the Third Reich, and the Crown was casting about for ways and means to facilitate their escape...Now obviously, one of the most helpful aids to that end is a useful and accurate map, one showing not only where stuff was, but also showing the locations of 'safe houses' where a POW on-the-lam could go for food and shelter.
Paper maps had some real drawbacks -- they make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, they wear out rapidly, and if they get wet, they turn into mush.
Someone in MI-5 (similar to America 's OSS ) got the idea of
printing escape maps on silk. It's durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads, and unfolded as many times as needed, and makes no noise whatsoever.
At that time, there was only one manufacturer in Great Britain that had perfected the technology of printing on silk, and that was John Waddington Ltd.  When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do its bit for the war effort.
By pure coincidence, Waddington was also the U.K. Licensee for the popular American board game Monopoly.  As it happened, 'games and pastimes' was a category of item qualified for insertion into ?CARE packages', dispatched by the International Red Cross to prisoners of war.
Under the strictest of secrecy, in a securely guarded and inaccessible oldworkshop on the grounds of Waddington's, a group of sworn-to-secrecy employees began mass-producing escape maps, keyed to each region of Germany, Italy , France or where ever Allied POW camps were located.
When processed, these maps could be folded into such tiny dots that they would actually fit inside a Monopoly playing piece.
As long as they were at it, the clever workmen at Waddington's
also managed to add:
 1.    A playing token, containing a small magnetic compass
   2.    A two-part metal file that could easily be screwed together
 3.    Useful amounts of genuine high-denomination German, Italian, and French currency, hidden within the piles of Monopoly money!
British and American air crews were advised, before taking off on their first  mission, how to identify a 'rigged' Monopoly set ? by means of atiny red dot, one cleverly rigged to look like an ordinary printing glitch,  located in the corner of the Free Parking square.
Of the estimated 35,000 Allied POWS who successfully escaped, an estimated one-third were aided in their flight by the rigged Monopoly sets.  Everyonewho did so was sworn to secrecy indefinitely, since the British Government might want to use this highly successful ruse in still another, future war.
The story wasn't declassified until 2007, when the surviving
craftsmen from Waddington's, as well as the firm itself, were finally honoured in a public ceremony.
It's always nice when you can play that 'Get Out of Jail' Free' card!

It's been a while since I visited the Home Page, and I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the pictures from our time. Amazing how many things are gone. When I was teaching, I used to keep a set of ball and jacks in my classroom, and on rainy days taught those interested a "new" alternative to a screen game. Jim, just to underscore the 50 years since 2001 was released, the Century 21 theater where I saw the movie when it opened in 1967, a futuristic-looking dome, has now been demolished. There were actually 4-5 of those domes in San Jose, and I believe they saved one to convert to a store/restaurant.

Yes Jim, I think everyone else went into winter hibernation and since the warmer weather isn't here yet, they don't realize it is spring and they can come out now!  Wake up y'all!

Another bubble burst –

Remember growing up and Mom telling us to eat lots of carrots because it would be good for our eyes and help us see better in the dark?  Bummer, not really sorta so.

Yes, carrots are good for the eyes because they are loaded with vitamin A, which is good for healthy eyes. Help see better? Not really, my glasses did that. See better in the dark – a WWII secret trick.

Turns out that during WWII Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe was doing most of its bombing of England at night. By 1940, the RAF had developed a type of radar to help locate and shoot down the German bombers in the dark. They proved to be quite successful. To keep the radar secret, the British told the world that their ability to shoot down the night bombers was because their pilots ate lots of carrots, enabling them to see the enemy planes in the dark. Seems everybody believed that, including our moms.

Hey classmates,

One of our own has written a book which is available on Amazon. The title is "Flashbacks: A Memoir" and the author is none other than Jim Gibbons, aka Jimbo, aka Gibby and for those of us who knew him in grade school, aka mouse.  If you are among the majority of us who had the pleasure to know him you will find it interesting and somewhat surprising. Enjoy the read and feel free to post your comments.

Hey Dave, thanks for Plugging My Book. It’s been a real interesting experience reading and hearing people’s reactions, in fact I wrote a piece called Plugging My Book, which can be read on line at theava.com (March 28). There are 5 5 Star reviews on Amazon.com. I will have a reading at the Sausalito Library on June 12 at 7 pm, if anyone lives in the area. Aloha

I  will be taking a trip tomorrow up in the mountains about 150 miles away to see a classmate from Custer High whom I have not seen since 1981.  Do you remember Cherylynn Shelton?  She was in the same grade as I was; in fact, we went to elementary and junior high together.  But she dropped out at the end of junior year.  Or rather, the principal made her drop out because she was married during her junior year.  She married Martin Rosenfeldt, the captain of the basketball team, 2 years older than we were.  She was not pregnant at the time; but they made her drop out anyway.  (She had their first child in 1964.)  She has been living in North Carolina at a nursing home for many years with a cardiac condition.  I will drive up to see her and take her out to lunch.  The staff feels comfortable with me doing this since I am an R.N and can handle any emergencies.  I will take her picture and post it in 2 days.  (If I get her permission).  Here is her junior year class picture:

I do remember Cherylynn, Melody. It was such a "messed up" thing to have made her drop out. In some ways, times have changed for the better; high schools now try to get kids NOT to drop out, and facilitate things for even pregnant students so they can finish school. Say "hi" to her, and I hope she lets you post her photo.

Hi Melody: I remember Cherylynn Shelton. I casually knew her at Custer. I also remember you. We were at Custer together. You probably don’t remember me. My last name was Knopf. I am on Facebook  I live in Mukwonago WI. We are finally getting our Spring. It was a long winter. Have a good lunch with Cherylynn.

Well, here are the two of us.  Both older and fatter, but still BFF!  Staff that saw us together said, "Oh, are you sisters?" BTW I'm the one in the blue dress, Cheri has glasses, so you can tell us apart. LOL!

Terri, I always thought it was cruel to make her drop out; she was such a good student!                       Penny, yes, I remember you, too.  Weren't we in class together in elementary also?

Yes we were in elementary school together. There I am in the front row. You could pass for sisters!! Thanks for sending. I am still friends with Jeanette Perszyk if you remember her. They live in California.

This came in from Tom Burger regarding Melody's post about Cherylynn :

"Yes I too recall the class. I think that was Mr. Riemers fifth grade class. As I recall he was a truck driver in the summer. I always wondered why she dropped out of Custer."

I see too that the number of people posting has gone down, and I’ve thought of several possible reasons:

1 – People are still hung over from the last reunion party. Maybe, I know we're a bit older and don’t recover quite as fast, but more than six/seven months is pushing it a bit.

2 – Nationwide shortage of Geritol.

3 – People have been posting, but the site has been hacked by some nefarious entity, spying on how the gardening is coming along in northern Michigan, how hot it is in Bullhead City, or personal secrets of old ex-athletes, etc. Might even been a hacker from Rufus King, they were always jealous of us anyway.

4 – People have become addicted to their iPhones (e.g., my wife), and are too busy now texting more than they ever talked, or keeping up on the latest 1,297 news, traffic, sports and game apps. I see today that Apple is coming out with an update to combat iPhone addiction in teens. Wonder if it’ll work for us aged folks.

5 – It’s more than 5 years since this thing has started up, and our metabolism has changed – longer naps and shorter web time?

6 – We’re too busy watching golf tournaments now that the season has started.

7 – In the interest of preserving our little bit of remaining sanity, people have moved into caves, or reduced all electronic input to only the local oldies station on the radio.

8 – Winter was too long.

9 – All of the above.

10 – None of the above.
