This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Packer Fans Live On!

We have second and third generation Cheeseheads among us. Both daughters know the game well (they put me to shame) and wear their green shirts when watching (EVERY game). Our grand daughter has her own Packer shirt AND football. The dream never dies.

My son, Mike, is taking our grandsons, Tyler (8) and Alex (6), to the Packer's practice this week. They bring their bikes so Packer players can ride them off the practice field - then it's off to Chili John's!!

Transported Cheeseheads abound in my part of CA. Some of the more conservative and older (yes, even older than me)  parishioners at my church look askance when one of our own cheesheads takes communion in his Packer jesey with "Favre" emblazoned on the back, with his whole family kneeling next to him in green and gold. They DO leave their cheeseheads at home, though.

Can you see the grins on their faces to see the packer players.  You know they will never forget the day.

Ryan Braun threw my grandson, Ethan, a ball at a Brewers game and signed it after the game.  That and the trophy fish he caught are his most prized  keepers.

Carol, Remember it was Gutknecht and Gregorus - 2 Gs in the GEMS!!! You and Bryan discovered the name in your LEGENDARY basement, while looking at the list of names.   To this day, everytime I hear Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, I can hear them.  They may have not made the big time, but I distinctly remember, they had "groupies"!!!.

Oh James-James--I live about 40 miles south of Phillips on HWY 13. Live on a lake--We call it gods country up here. But most important it is not up North in Wisconsin--It's Up Nort. Took me a while to learn the language but am finally getting the hang of it.

Jim Cejka

Ray, Carol P, anyone - it's Jim, please.

James was the chauffeur, i.e., "Home James."  Somewhere there is a diploma with James on it and that was about the only time I used James.

Ray,

Medford? Saw the biggest black bear down there crossing 13 once. Guy almost hit it on a motorcycle. That would have been interesting.

Yes, it is Up Nort, if you live there. The rest of WI has no idea there is anything north of hwy 29 except maybe cottages and mosquitoes, so they think of it as a direction "up north", rather than an actual, livable, place.

Barbara Blair (Brenzel)

Just got back from my vacation "up nort" - was at a cottage near Ashland.  Went through Phillips & Park Falls .  It IS God's country!  Had no computer access so I couldn't get my daily "fix" with this website.  Saw a bear & a wolf this time - first sighting for both for me and I go to Ashland every summer.  Now I live "down south" in Oak Creek.

Sure looking forward to the reunion.

Barb

"A 5 foot long, 70-pound alligator named Wally-Gator was discovered in a Milwaukee home and confiscated by the police. Wally's owner, Lee Rau, says that he and his family did not know keeping an alligator as a pet was illegal in Milwaukee. The family has attempted to get their pet back but police put a hold on the gator and have not said whether the reptile's owner will face any charges. Currently Wally is resting comfortably inside the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control shelter."

Milwaukee - What's up! Please clean up your act before all of the Custer Alum converge on the city.

James. Uh! I mean Jim....or, is it JC? Barbara & Ray. I live in the "Thumb" of mid-Michigan and people south of Hwy 59 think I am "Up north." I agree with the northern contingency of WI. "Up nort" is the UP of Michigan, "nordern" Visconsin, "nordern" Minni-sota and "Nort" Dakota. - Nort Carolina....nah!

By da vay! I have the real scoop on Gar(r)y. Will share it later. Very interesting!

Ken - A really cool scoop about me?  Are you talking about the time I bet you a $1 you wouldn't run naked from the gym, up to the "office" and back?  Remember that you did ... and nobody noticed even though it was lunch hour.  Now if you start telling lies about me I may have to tell the rest of the story!!!  By the way, did the 2 years of therapy help?  Oh that's right, part of the program was to enlist in the Marines as a photographer  ... but all 2000 positions were already filled..

Kenneth Pallaske

Gar(r)y - I know good HR guys would not tell lies or stretch the truth...you are a good HR guy, aren't you? If that stroy is true, which I am not saying is true, you still owe me a dollar, with interest. Let's see, compounded daily, 365 days a year, every fourth year is Leap Year, for about 52 years....Hmmmm! You owe me $1,378,195. 62. Pay up next month...California Hippie!

You calculate like a Marine ... always inflated numbers!   But I pay my debts.  Ask Ken Walter for the money.  He's my financial backer.  (HR people cannot tell a lie.  We're health and happiness people!)

So much talk about up north Wisconsin.  Doug and I bought a cottage on Butternut Lake in Park Falls back in 1995.  In 2002 we tore it down and built our retirement home in 2003.  We love it up here.

Another thing I remember is a class picnic between our Junior and Senior years at McGovern Park.  The girls brought sandwiches and the guys brought beverages and???  There was a rousing game of baseball - boys against the girls.  Carol Albert Knutsen hit a ball so far out over the heads of all the guys in the outfield.  We could only sit down and laugh.  Then it started to rain and I said - Come over to my house.  We walked from the park about 1 1/2 blocks long of people.  My dad held the outside door and my mon the door for the basement.  We ate our sanwiches, played music and had a great time.  My folks talked about it for a long time!

Back "Up Nort" again as my friend JIM would say!  (I always called you Jim by the way!)  We are about an hour and a half north of Hwy. 29.  It has always surprised me how many "flatlanders" (Illinois) found their way to northern WI and loved to buy cottages up here.  Really sorry we didn't meet up with you when you were up here.  We have had the place for almost 35 years.

Patty, you get the "great memory" award!  The name for the GEMS did originate in my basement.  I will take partial credit, thank you.  Now, as to my basement being "legendary",  I don't know about that.  I remember if I wanted to have friends over, I had to clean it.  Hated the cobwebs that always appeared every week.  I also remember that my folks were really cool about not coming downstairs.  The signal was the hallway light flashing if it was time to send everyone home or we were too loud, too quiet or the pizza arrived.  I really think they could hear everything since the house was not very soundproofed.  Got some pictures too.  Practiced many new dance steps in that old basement!

Still love my Packers, but they better be sure about a backup quarterback.

Janis - It appears that my brother David (Custer '59) lives about 6 blocks from you.  I've never been up that far nort.  I don't think my passport covers those areas and Californians aren't allowed!  Alaska and Canada sure, but nothing as cold as northern Wisconsin!   Didn't you have "after game parties" at your house too?

Carol - I think I remember something about the flashing light signal.  Some people remember a lot of details from back then.  For me it's a big blurr ... kinda like my vision when trying to type this! Do you really have pictures?  I've been looking for stuff like that for a continuous slide show at the reunion.  PLEASE send them!

Thank you Jeanne, for the pictures of Custer.  Does not look bad.  The building stood up to the passing years better than I did.  Sure hope they put the building to good use.  We may drive by when we come back for the reunion.
