This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Jeanne - the pictures of Custer today are great, and it's encouraging to know it's still up and running, although under another name. It's nice to know that all our "places" are still there, especially the stadium.  I have memories, not specific - of the side doors too - that go to the gym and music areas. It looks good!

Jeanne,

Flag pole duly noted - thanks.

To paraphrase - one picture is worth a thousand memories.

Thanks for the CHS pics Jeanne. It's good to realize that the building and grounds still look the same. My only and fairly lasting impression of Custer high school was in the early 80's. A friend of mine and I went down to teachers' convention in Milwaukee. I talked her into taking a ride to my old alma mater - I hadn't seen it since 1962. After parking in the lot we went to the gym doors - there we had to talk our way past the guards - something about a "teacher's exchange." Our first stop was to the girls' restroom in the gym lobby. When we walked in there was a large group of girls standing around smoking. By the looks on their faces I could tell it wasn't a big deal to have adults walking in there - I wisely decided I could curtail my impulse to say something to the effect - "WTF are you doing?!" We then walked about halfway down the hall - I was so disappointed by that time we quickly left. We were so good and innocent in the early 60's.

We stopped at Custer the summer of 1985.  I wanted to show our kids.  The front doors were open so we went in.  It was neat to see class of 62's placque up on the wall.  First in line.  A lady in the office said we could take a look around, so we did.  I was happy to see the interior looking so good.  The wood floors were aged, but still shiny.  It still seemed big to me and sure brought back a host of memories.

Wish I had visited CHS during the summer.

If you want to "visit" Custer, go to YouTube and do a search for Custer High School.  Then stand back.  I'm not sure that school is in the same universe we were in.

A lot of people have talked about sitting here, sitting there because the teacher sat us in alphabetical order. So.....whoever is doing the seating for the reunion should maybe sit everybody in alphabetical order - that way everybody would be sitting with somebody familiar?  Right?  (LOL)

Karen Gerstl (LeDuke)

Please not alphabetical order, all my friends would not be near me.

I have no idea who sat near me alphabetically at CHS - and I wouldn't on September 15, 2012 frown

I think Meribeth is going to seat people according to how nice they were in high school.  That would leave Marilyn next to Meribeth near the back with Sandy ... plotting to overthrow us nice people in the front!  Ah, but 50 years later we're on to you.  Never go to bed angry when laying awake calculating revenge is so much more satisfying.

As I read through the biographies and messages of our classmates, I was struck by how many went on to teaching, nursing, improving and influencing the lives of others. Perhaps, if there is a legacy to the CHS class of '62, it is that so many, like Tom, went on to create their own legacies.

Everyone...

Here's a link to an article about Tom Winslow that appeared in today's Milwaukee JournalSentinel:

I just read the link that Jeanne posted about Tom Winslow.  I am so shocked.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and his family.

Jeanne, thank you for posting the article about Tom Winslow. I am honored to have known him while at Custer High School. I remember him as a quiet, persistent and kind man. He grew to be the type of man that creates a huge hole in the hearts of those who loved him when he leaves. I was in awe after reading about his adult life.  He was a man who had the courage, strength and wisdom to devote his life and recovery from an insidious disease into serving others. He was a selfless and brave champion!

I was on Facebook the other day, and was amazed to see a post shared from my sister-in-law in GA from a good friend of hers (whom I don't know) in NY mourning the loss of Tom WInslow, and crediting him with saving his life. It goes along with what Jim C. just said: Tom chose a career that made a huge impact on people's lives, as did many others in our class. I am proud to have known Tom, happy I had a chance to exchange messages with him -   thanks to this wonderful website - and enormously sad that we have lost him, and not to have given him a hug at the reunion. My heart goes out to Peg and the many people who knew and loved him.

So sad to hear of Tom's passing.  God Bless Tom and his family.  My heart goes out to you.  God wants us all back at some time.  We are all here just on loan.  When it is time, God says come back home and be with me.

I haven't been on this site for a week....I am shocked at the news of Tom's passing. I read the article pertaining to his life and can't help but admire him for the obstacles he overcame. His life is an example of what God wants from all of us - to be charitable and giving. We will miss you, Tom. My sincerest condolences to the Winslow family. As a believer, I know Tom is in God's loving arms right now.

Ken,

Thanks so much for the memories via that link.  I remember trying to talk my father into buying me a turquoise '57 Chevy for my 21st birthday.  He loved me alot, but never got me the car.  He did get me front row seats to Elvis'  last concert in Milwaukee though.  I had gotten his autograph when he was making I think it was "Love me Tender" at Paramopunt Studios.  My parents knew the switchboard person real well and she got me into the studio and thus the autograph (as well as Tommy Sands and Pat Boone...Pat was born exactly 10 years before me on our co-birthday of June 1).  I also remember hula hoops and American Bandstand.  Is Annette still alive from Mickey Mouse Club?  (I remember she had some terrible disease in her later years.)  Thanks again for the fond memories.

Now, everybody's going to get all dressed up and fancy for this thing (i.e. home page - "skinny clothes"). Why not make it more memorable and fitting by doing it as a Custer "sweatshirt" day. Jeans, sweatshirts, T-shirts, DAs (for those that still have hair) - all those things Mr. Michalak wouldn't let us wear back then.

Sure Jim ... you can wear anything you want but FIRST YOU HAVE TO COME TO THE REUNION!!!
