Welcome to the Custer High School Message Forum.

Be aware, the "Message Forum" is NOT password protected.  Unlike profiles that are password protected, anybody who gets to this webpage can see what is written here.  Nobody can contact you directly based on this forum unless you reveal your personal contact information.  Use the "Message Center" for sharing personal contact information with another classmate.

This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Nancy,

The next time we are in Curren, we will have to give you a shout-out. You're right, the weak move to the Left Coast.

Who is that person in the photo that has infiltrated Ken Pallaske's profile?  I wasn't worried too much about Ken but I'm rethinking my position.  Afterall, he is a marine and they think they're never out of the service.  We're okay as long as there's no photographers around!

Dear Classmates,

Garry Sellers thinks that, because I have not posted anything in a while, I have given up on you and the website. Nothing could be further from the truth! I check the MESSAGE FORUM daily and am happy to see pictures from the reunion when you have posted them. Keep them coming! Looks as if you all had a great time at the 50th. Pleased to see photos of the Custer building and happy to know that the principal is trying to maintain a well-kept facility.

I don't add posts frivolously, but if I feel I have an appropriate comment to make, you'll hear from me.

Until then, enjoy your Autumn weather, wherever it may be.

Jeanne

P.S. He (meaning Garry) tells me I've been missed on the website. I'm not sure by whom. Me thinks he has a vivid imagination!

Patricia, I LOVE your memory from Friday night! I thought our classmates looked young and energetic too, and looked like people who are still very busy - doing whatever - either working or retired. I am so glad I went! I haven't seen anybody since graduation day, and I am amazed at how many really good, good people were in our class. Now I know Garry will come up with some exceptions, but.  . .

O.K.--Everybody loves Gary. Just saw the pics where the table next to Gary up front won the quiz thing. What is this? Gary put the Browning crew back in the very corner where no one would see or hear from us. We actually won this competion but we were ignored. Out of sight-out of mind? We feel devistated.

Hey, waitaminnit! Our table was the closest one to the BACK door of the ballroom! We did yell out our score pretty loudly, though, to get noticed. The cheerleaders should have loaned you the bikini T-shirts. Then all the Custer paparrazi would have headed your way, and - when you had their attention. . . . .

My Dear Euell Gibbons (look it up),

You, Stanelle, and Gilbert elected to sit in the far back corner most likely because that's where your teachers made you sit while at Custer.  Even so, you made more noise than any other 3 tables combined.  You will also note that Browning was well represented in the winning group ... Kathy Piette and Pat McCarthy.  Those two, along with Sally Hopfinger were very clear in their request to be seated far from you.  They appreciate your cooperation in knowing your place.

And if you had read the instructions for the Trivia quiz, lying, cheating and stealing were expected behaviors.  I think bribery was also encouraged.  If not, it was at least implied.  Therefore not only did you lose on total points but also because you're losers and couldn't follow instructions!

There will be a make-up quiz at a time and place of my choosing.  Have you got the kickback thing down yet?

I wish I had done a little more picture taking and a little less talking. My voice was hoarse both nights between the reunion and staying with family and doing non stop talking.  Gary is doing such a great job with this web site. I hope more classmates keep posting more pictures.  I did order my DVD yesterday, but it will be 4-6 weeks before it arrives.  Need more pictures now smiley.

Ray, I've had time to reflect on my hostile response and I have seen the error of  my ways.  When I think of your little group of John Gilbert, John Stanelle, and yourself, if you take your combined weight now minus your combined weight back in 1962 I don't think you'd show more than a 10 or 15 pound total weight gain for the group!.

For that reason alone you should receive the proper recognition.  We should have had you on the stage and supplied rotten tomatoes to the rest of the class.  We should have had Mama Mias bring in 20 orders of garlic bread dripping in butter and made you eat it.  We should have washed that down with malts from Kopps and hot fudge sundaes from any other custard stand.

Then we should have asked you to take a table in the hallway.  You guys are disgusting and a disgrace to the aging process.  You make it difficult for the rest of us old people to excuse our waistlines, hairlines, and eating habits.  That is suffiecient reason to uninvite you to the 100th reunion ... unless you can display real signs of aging by that time!

Publicist: 'Moon River' singer Andy Williams dies

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Andy Williams, the silky-voiced, clean-cut crooner whose hit recording "Moon River" and years of popular Christmas TV shows brought him fans the world over has died, his publicist said. He was 84.

Williams died Tuesday night at his home in Branson following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, his Los Angeles-based publicist, Paul Shefrin, said Wednesday.

With an easy style and a mellow voice that President Ronald Reagan once termed "a national treasure," Williams proved ideal for television. "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats from 1957 to 1971, featured Williams alternately performing his stable of easy-listening ballads and bantering casually with his guest stars. He received 18 gold and three platinum albums over his long career and was nominated for five Grammy awards. He released an autobiography in 2009, "Moon River and Me: A Memoir."

Oh, yes, Marian - such memories....thank you.

Prom night: a corsage on one's left arm (do they still wear those?); a pair of heels to match the dress (OMG, how we suffer now for wearing those for the ensuing 30 years!); Karsten in a white tux (do my female classmates recall how, when the object of our affection walked into the room, we could barely breathe? Fifty years later and I still love him more than life itself. But now I can breathe.)

09/26/12 02:03 PM #437

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

Awww, Nancy - that's wonderful! Unfortunately the H.S. object of my affection didn't know I existed, so I had to learn how to breathe eventually.

I loved Andy WIlliams, and am so glad he had such a long career. The article said he was still doing one show a night in Branson, even after his cancer diagnosis. Now there's a role model! My sister and I chipped in together to belong to the Columbia Record Club, and we didn't want to quit until we had all of Andy's 33s. Loved to sing along with his beautiful voice.

WAIT A MINUTE FRAU Boerger!!!  Why would it only be the girls who swooned when "the object of our affection walked into the room”?  Do you know how far we fellows would walk out of our way to be able to walk into that room to be with you?  Or to take a hallway that might lead to just walking passed her for a fleeting glimpse of her smile!  Or to know that she might just be at a place around a certain time and just happen to be passing by?  Or to rush home after practice so you can tie up the one family telephone for hours (I’m surprised I wasn’t shot in my house with a minimum of 6 or 7 people home at one time) talking complete and utter drivel … sometimes not talking at all … just feeling close?

Well, none of that ever happened to us guys.  We were always tough and only interested in one thing, as I recall being told.  We never felt vulnerable nor hurt.  No matter who we had an eye for they would always be at our beck and call.  We never got dumped for another boy.  We were never jealous or unsure of ourselves.

Ya, being a guy meant never having to say I’m sorry … unless your name was Thompson or Sauer!

Gordon Sauer

Wow - the Webmaster (the Custer Playboy) is really on a roll.  First his recent essay was not his experience, but that of his normal friends who related to him our anxieties concerning girls.  Gary (aka Garry) was our counselor for advice on girls and we listened cuz he claimed he was the "expert".  He never had problems getting dates and told us every Custer girl wanted to date him.  Not sure of the reality of that statement, but we all believed him. Even Hands (aka Willman) sought his advice.  Garry traded his expertise for advice from track team members, like  Walters, Thompson, and others on how to "run with speed", but to no avail. Finally, Garry's knowledge of sheapshead came from the "Sheapshead Book" I gave him on my last trip to Calif.  That all being said, I look forward to the 55 the or earlier reunion hosted by the Calif group and also the next Calif Sheapshead tournament. Now back to my job.

Garry - wonder of wonders! Fifty years later the other half of the class admits to its soft side. Better late than never. Can we thank those beautiful granddaughters of yours for this appealing revelation?

Thanks Gordy!  I was about to run for the box of Kleenex when your post came up negating the need.

FYI,

Ken Rabas had hoped to be at the reunion, but his wife was very ill.  His wife Sue (Custer class or 64) died a few days after the reunion.

Breathe David and Gordy.  You'll be okay.  I haven't broken a sacred boy oath.  I'm still the stud-muffin you always imagined me to be.  I won't tell anybody about those tearful admissions you made about not being loved, about being dumped,  about not being able to find dates for the prom.  Your secrets are safe with me!

Now Terri, tell Gordy who that oaf was and he'll beat him up for you!  (But please don't tell me it was Gordy!)   I like the way you breathe ... because it usually comes with  a smile!

09/28/12 09:26 AM #444

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

Well, sorry to break it to you, but he was in the class of '63. And it really isn't his fault, because I could have actually let him know he was the object of my affections. Then I would have actually had a right to be heartbroken. :-) Now off for a morning walk in the fog!

Thank you for the happy birthday wishes.  I've lied about my age for so long that I really can't remember my true age.

Keep posting those reunion pictures.  It is so much fun to see all our classmates.  Lets keep this going!

About pictures.  There were individual pages of pictures being passed around at the reuntion of grade school photos and different pages from a yearbook, maybe.  There were always too many people handling these copies that I only got to see one from Browning 6th grade.  Whoever supplied all those old photo pages - could you please find a way to scan and post them?  If this is not possible, maybe if you mailed them to Garry, he would be good enough to scan and post?  Please heart
