Welcome to the Custer High School Message Forum.

Be aware, the "Message Forum" is NOT password protected.  Unlike profiles that are password protected, anybody who gets to this webpage can see what is written here.  Nobody can contact you directly based on this forum unless you reveal your personal contact information.  Use the "Message Center" for sharing personal contact information with another classmate.

This message forum is an ongoing discussion about anything and just about everything ... within reason.  One thing our class was good at was having opinions.  Almost 70 years of life experience certainly qualifies us as experts on most everything!   Ask a question ... give an opinion ... share some insights ... it's our web site, it's our forum.  That said, it's probably not a good idea to get into arguments about politics, religion, and the like.  While we're experts on everything, we also have a wide range of values and beliefs. This site belongs to all of us ... the whole range ... and we are not here to isolate, alienate, or subjugate anybody.  Of course insults, humiliation, sophomoric barraggadocio, and demented humor is expected behavior among some of us less mature people.

Barb - I got the same email message that somebody had posted a new message in the forum.  I opened it and it was Jim's Memorial Day inputs.  But yours didn't come in that way.  I never got anything in my email.  I think it's Jim infiltrating us somehow!  Never trust a guy with a tongue depressor and a proctoscope!  He doesn't know which end is up!!!

If this keeps happening I'll find out from our vendor what's going on.  A couple of people reported difficulties in getting onto the website.  But I think it might have been because our vendor was doing maintenance or upgrading ... or sending unsolicited forum messages!

Thanks from me too, Jim for the Memorial Day post. I always get an e-mail when there's a new Message Forum Post, and it takes me to the Forum when I click "See more .. ."  I think that there was an option that I selected a long time ago when I first joined the Message Forum to be notified by e-mail whenever a new message had been posted.

Barbara - Terri is right.  If you go into the  "Member Functions" and select the "Notify Me" tab, the 4th choice down the options is when: "A new response is posted in the Message Forum", and the options are "immediately", "once a day", or "never".  I had "once a day" selected but had never gotten the notification before this.  I switched it to "never."  I don't know why we suddenly were getting those notifications when we hadn't before.  I'll see if Class Creators has done something different.  I still suspect Jim.  How can you trust a guy who doesn't deny owning a proctoscope?  Right this moment he's excitedly looking up "Member Functions" but he'll be in for a disappointment.

I see now that when I get a message in e-mail, it does take me right to the message forum.  I don't recall if I ever requested it but I sure have it now!  Must be Jim!

As my hero and mentor, Sgt. Schultz would say, "I know NO-TINK." "I SEE NO-TINK."

Barbara and other harassed classmates ... including Jim who knows no-ting:

I've been following a string of emails between Class Creators, our site builder, and a number of administrators from other schools.  For some reason the notification preferences under member functions got changed or overridden in the passed couple of days.  The result is that some people are getting emails they didn't want.  Supposedly they have reverted back to what you originally had selected, e.g. to be notified immediately, once a day, or never.  Just to make sure, go back into the "Notify Me" tab on the left hand side of this page and check to see that the appropriated box is checked for your preference.

I got the daily e-mail for posts when I joined. But, they ended about 4 months ago; and, I didn't really notice when they stopped. I was in the habit of checking the site when I got the notice. So, i didn't realize that it was months since I had checked the site; until I received a request for an update on my e-mail address. I am now back to the daily notification.

Cashed in on the door prize that I won at the picnic; this past weekend. Mitch's place is unbelieveable. Words can't describe it. Judi and I are already making plans to go back next June. Mitch doesn't have a web site; but, it is on Facebook. So, check it out. The only minor drawback is the fact that the area is pure tourist. Lots of winery's and antique shops. though.

And, we stopped in Madison to visit my new grandson; Henry Christopher. 9 lbs. 8 ozs, 22 inches. He missed my birthday by 8 days; but, made it on his uncles birthday. He also has 2 Great Grandfather Henry's and 2 Great, Great Grandfather Henry's.

Lauren,

Last year my daughter & I went to Quarry House, Mitch's place - had won a weekend during the reunion.  It is FANTASTIC - my daughter & I loved it!  And there are so many good restaurants - I didn't stay on my Weight Watcher's Plan at all!  Hope to go back some time IF my back ever gets better.

Barb,

Judi and I are planning on spending 2 maybe 3 days at the Quarry House next June. Mid week in the middle of the month. Hopefully there won't be as many tourists, then. Mitch said to let him know by mid April at the latest. It would be tempting to spend Christmas, there; but, I haven't seen snow ( except on the mountain peaks in 4 years ) I don't think that I want to learn how to drive in snow, again.

We went on the ghost tour. I find old houses to be fascinating. Maybe because my Grandfather's house in Michigan was built in the early 1800's. Next time, we'll go on the ghost pub tour; and, hit a couple more Winerys. Bought 2 different cranberry wines. I like cranberry wine; but it is hard to find outside of Wisconsin and Michigan. I got hooked on it at the Cedar Creek Winery in Cedarburg.

And, can't forget the antique shops; there are a ton of them in the area. I can spend hours going through them.

The dreaded, damnable boot is DEAD! And Jeanne is behind the wheel again! WHEW!! (Have been wearing the boot since my fall on March 19th, surgery was on March 27th. I didn't think this day would EVER come!)

Congratulations Jeanne!

And just in time for summer - roller skating, bike riding, hiking at Devil's Lake, fun stuff.

Thanks, Jim. Don't know about all those suggested activities. I'll settle for getting our house cleaned and back in   reasonable order, and perhaps relaxing on the deck with a glass or three of wine. Altho' we have been considering a driving trip to Glacier Nat'l Park and Banff in September. Time will tell.

I had to wear one of those boot things for some injury/surgery sometime past. It was on my right leg and too big, so I had to learn to drive with my legs crossed. Now I'm older, and with typical older male problems, I have to learn to drive with my legs crossed again, but for a different reason.

Jim,

You will have to drive like one of my sister-in-laws. She goes from rest area to gas station/truck stop to rest area; and so on and so forth.

Lauren,

May your sister-in-law never have to drive I-5 from Los Angeles to Sacramento.

My sister-in-law's frequent rest stops started out as an excuse for not going on long trips. But, she has used it for so long; that she has convinced herself that it's for real.

Just read the e-mail for the picnic; and, I'm curious about the date change from the prior posts. It doesn't really make any difference; but, as I said; I'm curious. And, it's a good thing that I'm not a cat; as, my curiosity hasn't killed me, yet.

Was working on an entertainment stand project today and got to thinking - where were Sauder things when I took wood shop? If there'd been a Sauder pump lamp kit, I might have even looked a little like I knew what I was doing.

I used to watch the 'New Yankee Workshop' on PBS. I always thought that with a little practice and about $15,000 worth of power tools; I could make the same things. Emphasis on the $15,000.

My dad was an Industrial Arts teacher and a friend of Roger Pederson's dad. He and Mr. Norman Eberhart were roomates at Oshkosh State Teacher's College in the 20's. We have a pretty good supply of pump lamps in the family.

I miss Norm's show. Our local PBS has changed to Rough Cuts, which I don't like nearly as well. I much preferred the Woodsmith's Shop, which they''ve apparently dropped. Don't have $15K worth of power tools yet, unless you include the building they're in. I like to spend time puttering out there, but don't consider myself a fine woodowrker. My wife tired of waiting for me to build some cabinets and we've got a few of those Sauder cabinets. We're in the process of moving and those particle board boxes are really heavy.

My skill set didn't get much beyond pump lamps. I never even made it to shadow boxes. And, if I was trying to build or fix something, I could run across the street to the little hardware store on Silver Spring, between 35th and 36th, and always find what I needed. Now, you go to Home Depot or Menards and WOW, tool-man sensory overload. You're right Lauren. The fun isn't in building something, it's in finding and getting the tools you think you need to do it. Acquisition ecstacy.

Jim, I remember that hardware store. We lived a block away; the big white house on the corner of 36th & Sheridan. My older brother still lives there. I believe that it was an ACE hardware store. Ace and True Value are the only real hardware stores left. I worked for Badger Paint for almost 7 years ( with a break for Uncle Sam ) I worked my way up to store manger; until I got sick of the general public.

I grew up right on the corner of 35th and Silver Spring, where "the bus stop bent the corner round". In my then, and still now, hazy brain, I didn't think many classmates lived over that way. Bill Gregorius, Denny Lucchesi, Janis Thompson I remember, and Kenny Rabas across from Edison. But, since this site has started, I have seen so many classmate postings, and find out that there were so many others in the area, whose houses I now realize I passed many times and didn't know it. I think I missed out on a good many friends.

I lived in the little house; second from the corner, across 35th St from Smith Park; until I was 10. Then we moved to the house on the corner of 36th St. Janis Thomson lived 2 doors North of us. And, Mr. Hagopian lived in the second house South of Custer Av on the East side of 36th St.

I faintly remember the streetcars on 35th St. The whole house shook when the streetcars went past. Silver Spring was the end of the line. I was 3 when the line was converted to the electric buses. Mr. Miller from Miller's Shoe store on Villard lived cross corner from us, on 36th St.

There were two houses between our house and Kenny Rabas' house. (Our house was south of theirs.) We used to walk to and from school together quite often and our families interacted quite a bit. Still stay in touch with Kenny, and occassionally his brother, Charles, but haven't seen Chuck for several years. Really was a nice, friendly neighborhood back then. By the time my mom died in 1996, we had been nervous about being in that area for several years and finally stopped worrying that something bad would happen to her there. Our son is a cop in Mukwonago and said, if we want to go back to see the place, he'll take us there. We've seen it on Google Earth and that' s good enough. It actually looks like it's being maintained pretty well. Hope the family that lives there now is as happy as we were then.
