Stop your grumbling, Jim. Be happy we still have teeth.

Lauren Dieterich

Or at least most of our teeth.

It turns out that most of the so called health food really isn't, especially after what is added because of the loss of flavor from being healthy or being made healthy. I have a bad habit of reading the entire label. I then look up the ingredients that I can't pronounce. That usually scares the hell out of me. Most of these ingredients serve no real purpose; except to make chemical company CEO's rich; and, in a lot of cases has no business being in food.

That's my preaching for the month; I'll get off of my soap box, now.

I'm with you Lauren. You really want to worry? Try reading books by Michael Polan, or Grain Brain, by David Perlmutter, or Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis. Gluten Free products taste like cardboard and have about as much food value and let's not even discuss meat issue. How is it possible to rule out so many foods and still worry about weight gain?

Nancy Davison (Boerger)

Phooey! I don't eat anything I can't pronounce. The fewer the ingredients, the better. Some additives, however, are better than others. I just baked a favorite at this house - a cake with a cup of Jack Daniels in the batter (sets off the chocolate and the espresso really nicely). A little more J.D. sprinkled on top while it's still warm. Now THAT's an additive! Doesn't need any preservative....with relatives arriving tomorrow and the kids three doors down-lake, the shelf life around here is prettty short.

We're hitting 90 degrees - a long way from the minus twenty-nine of last February. Bathing suits and swim fins; ski poles, long underwear and down jackets. No wonder our closets are so stuffed.

Mary - Someone (forgot who) sums it up nicely ( and so simply !)

Eat real food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

One item to remember when cooking with alcohol; heat drives off alcohol. So, if you want that little extra kick in your meal; it should be saved for dessert. Such as Kopps Cherry Amaretto Cheesecake or Rum and Coke frozen custard. Real amaretto and real rum. Since frozen custard is not heated, you get the full effect of the alcohol. I really miss Kopps. Culver's and Cold Stone Creamery are close; but, still not the same.

Jim Cejka

Nancy, can we cook the plants first?

07/30/15 10:34 AM #2032

Lauren Dieterich

Jim,  I think that you can cook anything. Although, the results will vary by item. I like beet greens. I think that they are better than any of the classic Southern greens. Just boil or steam them with a touch of salt and butter.

07/30/15 01:57 PM #2033

Nancy Davison (Boerger)

Sure, cook or not.

BTW, professional opinions vary on the amount of alcohol remaining after cooking, depending on the method, other ingredients, size of cooking vessel. As one baker said, " I always sprinkle some rum on my rum cake while it's still warm, just to be safe".

You had me going there for a moment, Nancy. I'm re-landscaping the yard, so I'm thinking different plants right now than you are. (Let's see, how do we cook manzanita, drooping agapanthus, or ice plant - that sounds more like it should go in the drink?)

As for the alcohol, if enough goes over the tongue first, who cares how much gets in the cake?

William Nelson

I'm with you on beet greens, Lauren. I do like all the Southern greens as well, though. I don't like beets. I used to tell my mom to throw away the beets and just prepare the greens.

Terry, Don't make the pictures smaller. I'd just have to blow them up, again. Bill, I'm with you on beets. I'll take the greens and let my older brother have the beets. He likes Harvard Beets.

Anyone remember the 'Fruit Ranch' on Fond du Lac Av and Bluemound Rd ? Or the original ' Fruit Boat ' on the river ? We liked the Fruit Boat because all of us kids got a free popsicle at the checkout. My Ex and I had bought some beets at the Fond du Lac store and the kid at the register was going to cut the greens off of the beets and I told him not to. It really surprised him. I guess that I was the first person who had ever asked him not to. Growing up, beet greens were the only ones that my Mother fixed.

A very hateful and insensitive member of the Custer reunion committee (I will mention no names Roger) sent me the attached article from the Journal ... no, not The Wall Street.  Sure, kick a bunch of people when they're down.  You guys thought he is a nice guy, huh?   Wait to see if you get any of our veggies or guacamole when El Nino arrives!  And what are you going to do when Bradford Beach is on 35th Street?

Garry,

If the water levels in Loch Mich are up three feet, that means that the beach at Bradford Beach is much narrower. That will be good news for the Polar Bears. They won't have so far to run next Jan 1 to get to the water/ice.

On a second thought, the drought here should be helping your golf game. The fairways are dry and hard, no more water hazards, etc. When you now hit one of your sterling 40 yard tee shots, if it stays in the fairway, it'll hit and roll at least 80 or 90 yards. Should cut at least a stroke, or six, off your game.

Regarding Lake Michigan water levels. If the 3' rise had put the lake way over the record high level; I'd be a little concerned. What happened was that everyone had gotten spoiled by the amount of sand that was exposed at Bradford Beach, by the extreme low water levels. I can remember ( just don't ask me for the dates, I've gotten old ) when the lake was so high that there was serious talk of dredging under the Hoan bridge, so that freighters wouldn't hit the bridge when going under it. But, since Bradford Beach has been taken over by volleyball nets, thereby eliminating sunbathing area; it's a moot point.

Packers finally back on TV, watched golf from Whistling Straits (fun looking course), and temp is below 100. Life is good in CA.

Lauren Dieterich

A bit of useless information. Whistling Straits was built by the Kohler ( as in plumbing ) family, as a private course. Anyone remember the ' Useless Information ' column in the Green Sheet.

Okay, trying to put up a link to Runaround Sue.

I was inspired to look this up by having it in a crossword puzzle clue today. I can't believe Dion could get through the whole song without coughing on all the smoke!

OK, Runaround Terri, we're all anxiously awaiting your vacation slide show - "My trip to "der Deutschen Land."

(Hmmm. Can retired persons really take a "vacation?")

08/17/15 11:08 AM #2044

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

Okay, Jim - the closest I can manage to a slide show on this website is to change my profile picture! I even tried to post this as just a photo on the message forum, and it kept putting the cornfield from my last post. By the way, Germany is really into alternative energy. The many many acres of cornfields are mostly for bio-fuel, and there are wind turbines surrounding every city which supply a good amount of their electricity. What I didn't see a lot of are electric or hybrid autos -- I see many more of those in the USA.

So, Jeopardy fans, how are we doing against the kids this week?

News about the "new" Custer football stadium.

You have to wonder, how long will the "Custer" stadium retain it's name; since the school no longer exists.

As far as Jeopardy goes, I'm holding my own. I usually get about 60% right.

And, it looks like we mill miss the modified picnic this year. I've been to the Machine Shed a couple of times. It's not bad.

Terri Levenhagen (Hoornstra)

Interesting tour through the "new" Custer stadium. So many memories there, and glad they've spruced it up to last another 50 years!  Enjoying Jeopardy Kid's Week for the main reason that they are SO DARN cute - and that I saw it the first time it ran, and almost remember the answers. But after bombing in the Non Common Core Math category, I'll take the Common Core any time! (I don't feel too badly, though, because the kids did too!)

Jim Cejka

OK. Another Jeopardy question:

Has anyone else felt that the 11-12 year olds on Jeopardy last week were smarter than some of the celebrities on this week?
